UPDATED July 27, 2025:
If you’re anything like me, you’ll want to know some stats about this quest. I created a spreadsheet way back in 2000 that I’ve been updating ever since. Since the first US Open was held in 1895 at the Newport Golf Club in Newport, Rhode Island, the US Open has been played on (or will be played on in the near future) 53 courses. The PGA Championship has been played on (or will be played on in the near future) 74 courses. 23 courses have hosted both. Eliminating the duplicates and accounting for the 2 courses that were closed before my quest started, 104 courses are on the list to be played. Of course, only Augusta National Golf Club has hosted the Masters.
These courses represent 26 states. New York (13 courses), Illinois (10) and Pennsylvania (10) are home to almost a third of the courses while five states house only one course each. As it relates to the quest, there are 15 states (Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin) where I have completed the list; 10 that are in progress and only 1 state where I have not played any of the Major courses (Michigan).
This table below is an alphabetical list of courses by state that have hosted or are scheduled to host a US Open, a PGA Championship or the Masters. The asterisk indicates which courses I’ve had the honor of playing so far, along with the year that I first played the course.
