Scott Elliott Dominates Frigidaire Classic in Record-Breaking Fashion
Midlothian, VA – (FCT) Six weeks ago, Scott Elliott put together a grand plan – work on his game in advance of two rounds on challenging and historic US Open courses, the Congressional Country Club and the Merion Golf Club. On Saturday, his plan bore a welcomed side effect – domination in the 17th edition of the prestigious Frigidaire Classic held at the Independence Golf Club outside of Richmond. Scott’s 6-under 66 set records for lowest net score ever, besting the previous record of 67 held by Larry Elliott and Todd Elliott (and achieved on a much easier Villa Elena golf course). His 14 stroke margin of victory destroyed the previous record of 9. His net 29 on the back included two of his 3 birdies for the round, an astonishing feat considering that there had only been five birdies in Classic history! Todd Elliott came in a distant second, just 2 strokes better than newcomer Blake Elliott.
“It was just his day today,” lamented Todd Elliott, who finished 2nd for the third Classic in a row. “I was glad to see someone go low to win the Classic. Some years the field can’t quite put it together and a big number can win. But not this year. Scott had a focus that I haven’t seen in awhile and his chipping and putting were clutch. I knew I was in trouble early when he kept hitting that 5 wood up near the green from out of all kinda places. His 40 on the back was a thing of beauty. Now I know how he felt after my round in the 2008 Classic at Heritage!”
The win marks the 5th time Scott has taken home the coveted Frigidaire Classic trophy. He now has won 2 consecutive Classics. If he extends his plan, he’ll be the odds on favorite to establish a new record in December by winning 3 in a row, a feat never before done. After Saturday, you can be sure that’s in his sights!
